WarmaHordes: Milton Keynes Steamroller

With Warmachine and Hordes seeing a resurgence in competitive play here in the UK, more and more tournaments are being announced and run across the country.  In the South of England, i'm lucky to have 3/4 metas within 1 or 2 hours travelling times so i'm really spoilt for choice for tournaments!

Any for the lists!  Maelok is a caster i've been working with for the last couple of months since the Blindwater update came out.  It has gone through various iterations including, Bone Shrines, Blind Walkers and the works, but once the Gatorman Husks became available,  oh boy, they REALLY ramp up Maelok's game.  Arkadius is my classic "pop my load turn 2" then i've either won, or shake hands because i'm not winning!  In all honesty, Arkadius is just a comfort Warlock that i've had the most experience with over the 3 years i've been playing Minions.  Also, excuse the ratchet SR sheet.  My parents recently moved to Milton Keyes so this was an opportunity to visit my 3,5 and 7 year old siblings who subsequently though my SR sheets was spare paper!

So yea, 3-1, not bad for the day, and it's a shame my one loss came in game 1.  But i'll run through what happened in each game and what i thought about the match up.

Game 1 - Arkadius vs Zaadesh2 - Assassination Loss

I went into this game with PTSD from the Derp Tortoises (Siege Anamatrix), i mean these things are stupid good.  But having got first turn, i ran up to just within the Derp Tortoise threat range and shoved Enliven and Hyper Aggressive up baiting the ranged attack in and hopefully getting better positioning through a 10' semi linear advance on the opponents turn.
Into Zaadesh2 turn 1, as predicted, he walked up his Derp Tortoise and takes shots into the Warhogs, and they Hyper Aggressive/Enliven to behind cover.
Now, this is where it goes wrong, having set up perfectly, I put up Ghostly on the Warhogs, use the Derp Turtles as feat targets, frenzy through into Zaadesh2 (who hasn't popped feat thankfully).  One Warhog removes all his transfers and leaves him on two boxes, then the second warthog charges in... and misses all three initial attacks on boosted nines.  Meh, it happens, dice will be dice, and Arkadius gets himself killed the turn after.  Oh well, back into the case he goes.  Looks like i'll be practising Maelok for the rest of the day!

Game 2 - Maelok vs Borka1 - 8-2 Scenario Win

To be honest, Maelok was heavily favoured in this game although I think Borka1 has loads of tech to help this match up.  The Husks ran into the Fennblades on feat, and the Posse ran up to engage and tie up the Champions so they couldn't charge in themselves.   The Fennblades struggled with the wall of Husks and ended up loosing more Fennblades due to Husk shenanigans than killing them.  Totem Hunter and Posse collected souls which further fuelled Maelok's liberal use of Mortality.  Easy 8-2 scenario win.  While this was a straight forward game, i think my opponent missed a few tricks.  Arcane Ward (which gave spell immunity) should have been put on the Glacier King in my opinion.  The minimum Croak Raiders and Iron Back Spitter trivially removed the Glacier King's mind aspect and with Mortality not allowing healing, that was a 35pt model the was now useless.  Borka1 also didn't cast Mosh Pit once, something i think would have helped stop the wave upon wave of Posse coming forward.

Game 3 - Maelok vs Lylyth1 - 8-2 Scenario Win

Going into this match up i was feeling pretty confident.  There wasn't a lot which could kill the amount of Posse i had on the table and outside of Parasite, i didn't think there was a lot coming my way.  The opponent ran ALL of his Grotesque Banshees right in front of a unit of Posse to stop me coming forward, i mean... cheers for all the souls i guess?  He ignored the Husks after he shot them once and in retaliation, it hyper aggressived forward and killed a Raptor.  Turn 3 onwards, Maelok sat on a cool 18 Fury, liberally applied Mortality, and fuelled boosted Venoms to remove the ambushing BlightBlades to came from both sides.  The Soul Slave also earned his dinner in this game as fully boosted Venoms for the cost 1d3 is beautiful for clearing flags.

The Husks from here on in, kept nibbling at Lylyth and her light war beasts, as the return sprays were enough of a disincentive to stop them from attacking back in their turn.
Game ends on turn 4 as the lone Angelius is not able to get anything substantial done and Maelok closing out the scenario win,

Game 4 - Maelok vs Kaelyssa - 10-5 Scenario win

Oh boy, game 4 was a tight tight game!  Kaelyssa, 2 units of Sentinels and Helios is the kind of armour and threat i think can really give Maelok a run for his money.

In all honesty, i think the Husks themselves saved this game for me.  Between Kaelyssa feat, Vengeance and charging POW12 weapon masters, i feel like Posse lose to Sentinels, but 3 Husks were enough to stop the Sentinels dead in their tracks.  This forced the Sentinels to give up board control and skipped activations/attacks so the returning sprays and blast didn't end up killing half the unit in return.  The glorious package of Croak Raiders and Ironback Spitters slowly chipped away at the Mortalitied Helios and needed the help of a handful of charging Posse to finally remove it from the table.  Husks also made their point back early as Eiryss2 came forward to plink damage and a cheeky Husk spray killed her.

The game however came down to the wire, Turn 5, I had 3 minutes on the clock and Kaelyssa had 6 minutes with Kaelyssa being 5-1 ahead.  I had foolishly ignored the right hand zone thinking no one was scoring due to no warjack on that side.  I did not foresee Refuge on Kaelyssa allowing her to get to that side of the board so quickly!  However, by the start of turn 6, the photo above shows Kaelyssa, by herself, staring down a Wraster and Spitter.  Due to not being able to contest zones due to being a Warcaster, Maelok scores three on consecutive turns while only moving two or three models on his turn to make sure he scores adequately.  1 minute 30 seconds left on the clock and a scenario win.

After Thoughts.

1) Husks, are without doubt, the MVP of the day.  In all three games they played, they stopped infantry dead in their tracks and gave the Posse safe passage.  The only draw back i would say is the cloud effects it leaves.  While it is great as a hazard to stop infantry from coming in, it also stops our Posse from charging de to LoS issues.  Close MVP after was the Soul Slave.  Boosted Magical Ability (4) for Mortality is great along with the free upkeeps for Soul Harvester. Specially against easy to hit and low def targets like the Glacier King and Helios.

2) I really need to learn to play Rask...
